Why do so many atheists tend to be socialist and authoritarian?

Unfortunately, I have met very few conservative or libertarian Atheists who believe in less government and unrestricted capitalism, which is actually progressive and promotes competition and technologically advances the human race. Why do so many atheists tend to be socialist and authoritarian? Believing that the all government is good government? Socialism actually harms our progression as a species, as the poor and meek are fed and kept happy at the expense of the strong and rich who've gotten their by hard work and creativity.
